Suicide bombers are easy to spot. They give out all kinds of tell-tale signs. Mostly because they're nervous. By definition they're all first-timers. There are twelve things to look for. No one who has worked in law enforcement will ever forget them. New York City. The subway, two o'clock in the morning. Jack Reacher studies his fellow passengers. Four are OK. The fifth isn't. The train brakes for Grand Central Station. Will Reacher intervene, and save lives? Or is he wrong? Will his intervention cost lives - including his own?
The pitch
Reacher's back for season four, and this time he's not in some small town in the sticks, he's landed in Philadelphia. Based on Gone Tomorrow. Woman on the subway pulls a gun, ends up dead, cops call it suicide, Reacher doesn't buy it for a second. Obviously he's right. Obviously it spirals into something way bigger than one dead woman on a train.
Why we are excited
Look, three seasons in and this show still hasn't dropped the ball once, that's genuinely rare for a streaming action series, most of them go soft by season two. Ritchson is still the only actor who's ever actually looked like the guy from the books instead of just a normal actor bulked up for the role, and he's saying this is the most physical season yet, which, fine, they always say that, but with this show it's usually true.
The city thing is what's got me though. Every season so far has been Reacher wandering into a small town where everyone clocks him as the stranger, and now they've dropped him in Philly where he can't stand out just by existing. That's a real change, not just a new backdrop, and I like that they're willing to mess with the formula instead of just running it back a fourth time.
Also they've already greenlit season five off the back of this one airing, which either means they're just confident or they've seen a cut of this and know it's good. Either way, decent sign. And Neagley dropping the same day as the finale is a nice bit of confidence too, handing you a whole extra show right as this one wraps up.
On the trailer
It's good, it leans into the city properly, grimy platforms, small rooms, that sense that he's actually boxed in for once instead of having a whole town to disappear into. Feels like a proper conspiracy too rather than one bad guy to punch, people covering up a death because it connects to something bigger. Reacher's still doing the deadpan one-liner thing which, good, don't want that to go anywhere. Doesn't show much of the actual plot mechanics, which I think is the right call, but the tone lands.
What we are hoping for
Mainly don't want the bigger setting to water down what actually makes this show work, the isolation, one guy against people who'd rather he stopped asking questions. City should raise the stakes, not just add more noise and more extras running around. Also hoping the new characters actually get something to do instead of just being there to get hit or explain the plot to us. If they keep the conspiracy tight instead of letting it sprawl everywhere, this could be the best season yet, but that's a big if.
One to watch if...
You like a hero who solves things with his fists and his brain about equally, you've rated how faithful this show's stayed to the books, or you just want a conspiracy thriller that isn't all boardrooms and laptops.
