Studio L308 Reviews

A film and television review publication produced by Studio L308, the student-led production studio at Ayrshire College. We cover new releases, festival titles and independent cinema, and provide our students with real-world reviewing and editorial experience.

About the publication

Studio L308 Reviews publishes written film and television criticism authored by media and film students at Ayrshire College, working to a house review format under lecturer supervision. Reviews appear on this site and are cross-posted to our Letterboxd, Serializd and The Movie Database diaries. The publication is non-commercial and educational: its purpose is to give students genuine editorial experience while producing honest, readable coverage.

Editorial leadership

The publication is edited and supervised by Bryan Shaw, media lecturer and documentary filmmaker at Ayrshire College. All student reviews are edited and approved before publication. Editorial responsibility, including compliance with review embargoes, rests with the named editor.

Our writers

Reviews are written by named media and film students at Ayrshire College, working to our house format under editorial supervision. Each review carries the writer's byline, and you can see our writers and their work on the reviews themselves. Read the reviews.

Institution

Studio L308 is based at the Ayr Campus of Ayrshire College and operates as part of its media and film provision. Studio L308 Reviews is the studio's reviewing strand.

Coverage

We cover new cinema and television releases, independent and festival titles, and retrospective pieces. We are building toward regular coverage of advance and festival screenings in Glasgow and, on occasion, London. We are happy to cover independent and studio releases and to arrange interviews with filmmakers where appropriate.

Publishing cadence

Reviews are published throughout the academic year in line with our teaching calendar. Our watch diaries on Letterboxd, Serializd and The Movie Database are updated regularly alongside the written reviews.

Editorial independence

Our reviews are independent and honest. We do not accept payment for coverage, and a review is never a condition of access or a favour to a distributor. Where a reviewer has any personal connection to a film, that review is reassigned or the connection is disclosed.

Because Studio L308 also produces its own films and television, we take particular care here: we do not give graded reviews to Studio L308's own productions. Our own work is covered separately as showcase pieces on the relevant production pages, not as scored reviews on the review feed. This keeps the review publication independent of the studio's production arm.

Corrections

If we get a fact wrong, we correct it promptly and note that a correction has been made. To raise a correction, contact the editor at the address below.

Embargoes

We understand and respect review embargoes. Advance material is handled only by the editor and by students who have agreed in writing to the terms, and nothing is published before the stated embargo time. Any embargo details supplied with a screening invitation will be honoured in full.
